SEATTLE, Wash. – A solo home run from senior
Niki Gonzalez and a seventh-inning rally from the Grand Canyon softball team wasn't enough on Saturday afternoon at Logan Field, as the Lopes dropped the series finale, 4-3, to Seattle (31-19, 9-3 WAC). The Lopes (24-23, 5-6 WAC) secured the series yesterday with a doubleheader sweep.
"I'm really proud of the kids," head coach
Ann Pierson said. "We had a great weekend of hard competition against a very talented team. It's easy to identify the great performances and we have a lot to pick from.
"Our pitching and defense were outstanding and our bats were aggressive. We started to feel the timely hitting again and had everyone contributing on some level. We stayed gritty at the plate against a tough pitching staff to get runs on the board in all games.
"We learned so many lessons this weekend," Pierson said. "These lessons are huge takeaways as we get closer to the tournament."
A Gonzalez yard ball to the right side put the Lopes on the board in the top of the second frame. The home run is the ninth of the season for the senior.
Alexa Coons dished four strikeouts through the first two frames to hold the Redhawks scoreless. She dealt nine on the game for a career-best, while allowing five hits.
Mariah Valencia (0-3) saw an inning of action as well.
The Redhawks tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning with a fielder's choice and a misplay at home plate by the Lopes.
SU took the lead for the first time this weekend with a 2 RBI single in the bottom of the sixth frame to lead, 3-1.
The trio of
Laynee Gomez,
Bianca Boling, and
Madelyn Dowdle loaded the bases at the beginning of the seventh inning with a single, double and single, respectively.
Kendsey Hill capitalized with a 2 RBI single up the middle to tie the game, 3-3, and put runners on second and third with no outs on the board.
GCU couldn't get anything else going in the top of the frame, and an RBI single in the bottom half helped the Redhawks walk off with a win on their senior day.
The Lopes close out the 2018 Western Athletic Conference regular season at home next weekend against Kansas City.
