GCU wins two in Seattle
SEATTLE, Wash. – The Grand Canyon softball team scored five of its seven runs in the seventh inning and beyond of today's doubleheader at Seattle U, as the Lopes (24-22, 5-5 WAC) downed the Redhawks (30-19, 8-3 WAC) twice for the series win at Logan Field. The pair of victories secures the series victory for the Lopes, its first of the season.
"This was a great opening day against Seattle," head coach Ann Pierson said. "They're such a strong team in every area of the game and we knew coming in that it was going to be a tough battle.
"Yessie (Morrison) threw a great game in the first one and continued to keep them off balance and our defense made some great plays behind her. Bo (Aguilar-Beaucage) threw a fantastic game. That's one of the best games she's had all year – she pounded the zone.
"When you're facing a team that's that good and has that many tools, no lead is ever good enough no matter how many outs we have. I'm really proud of our team, they're really starting to gel together and trust each other."
GAME ONE
A one-out RBI double from Kendsey Hill sent Madelyn Dowdle home from second base in the top of the third to give GCU a 1-0 lead.
The Redhawks loaded the bases twice in the bottom of the third inning and used a pair of RBI singles to go ahead, 2-1.
Sierra Smith began the seventh-inning rally and drove in pinch runner Taylor Tetone from first base with an RBI triple to left field, tying the game 2-2.
After Laynee Gomez reached on an SU error, Bianca Boling put the Lopes up 4-2 with another Redhawk error at shortstop, allowing Sierra Smith and Gomez to score.
Seattle came back with a run and threatened with loaded bases in the bottom of the seventh, but strong defensive efforts from the Lopes held onto the lead for the 4-3 win in game one.
Four different Lopes tallied a hit in today's game, led by a pair of singles from Gomez, Sierra Smith's triple and Hill's double. Niki Gonzalez also had a base hit.
Freshman Yesenia Morrison (7-4) earned her seventh victory and third in conference play with one strikeout on the game.
GAME TWO
Scoreless through seven full innings in game two, the Lopes and the Redhawks had just five combined hits in regulation.
Starting the extra-inning rally, Boling nailed a lead-off home run to right field to put the Lopes ahead, 1-0. Loriann Olson followed with a lofted RBI single over second base, sending Taylor Kaye home from third for the 2-0 lead in the top of the eighth frame.
Seattle responded with a two RBI triple with no outs on the board to tie the game, 2-2.
In the top of the ninth frame, Gonzalez led off with a double down the left field line. After Tetone came in to pinch run, Gomez smacked an RBI single up the middle to send Tetone home for the 3-2 lead.
The Lopes held the one-run lead as SU threatened with a two-runner situation, but the defense remained strong for the doubleheader sweep and series win.
The pair of Olson and Gomez were 2-4 on the game, while Kaye, Shea Smith, Gonzalez and Boling each had a hit apiece.
Brianna Aguilar-Beaucage (10-13) dished three strikeouts for the complete game victory.
GCU and SU return tomorrow at 2 p.m. (MST) to Logan Field to close out the series with a single game.
