Grand Canyon resumes conference play where it is coming off of a three-game sweep of Utah Valley to improve to 8-1 in Western Athletic Conference play. The series spans Friday, Saturday, Sunday featuring a 5 p.m. MST first pitch in the series opener. All three games will air on the WAC Digital Network.
THREE THINGS TO KNOW
- STREAKING: GCU has won 10 of its last 12 games. The wins were coming at a rapid pace last week as it was the first time GCU had won five games in a six-day span since March 2013.
- WAC HONORS: The Lopes had a pitcher win WAC Pitcher of the Week honors for the second time this season as Mick Vorhof claimed the honor. The senior closer appeared in three games over the course of the five-game week, and he recorded a save in all three appearances. Vorhof tossed 3.1 innings of scoreless baseball, allowing just one hit and now walks. He's the first GCU pitcher to earn a save in three straight outings since GCU's transition back to Division I in 2014.
- THE 200 CLUB: Head Coach Andy Stankiewicz recorded his 200th career victory last weekend as the Lopes swept Utah Valley.
SCOUTING
While ranking towards the bottom of the conference in most offensive categories, UTRGV's pitching staff leads the WAC with a 4.28 ERA overall. In WAC contests, the Vaqueros' 4.15 ERA ranks fourth in the conference. Much of their low staff ERA can be attributed to drawing double plays. UTRGV has turned 40 double plays this season, a mark that ranks second nationally.
UTRGV started the season 4-0 at home before dropping 4 of their next 5 in Edinburg. The Vaqueros took 2 of 3 from CSU Bakersfield at home to open WAC play. UTRGV lost 2 of 3 on the road at Utah Valley to fall to 3-3. The only non-conference common opponent between the two clubs has been TCU. The Lopes opened the season by taking 1 of 3 from the Horned Frogs. UTRGV lost 7-2 in a mid-week matchup.
Last week, the Vaqueros were swept in their three-game non-conference series at UC Santa Barbara. UTRGV out-hit the Gauchos in 2 of the 3 games. UTRGV won a 10-inning, mid-week matchup on the road at Texas State on Tuesday, 2-1.
LAST TIME OUT
- The Lopes fell in a mid-week game at home against Arizona. It was the second-largest crowd in program history with 2,819 fans filing into GCU Ballpark for the game.
- Last week, GCU swept a three-game WAC series against Utah Valley and a two-game mid-week series against UNLV.
WHAT'S NEXT
- GCU very briefly returns home to Phoenix for a one-game, mid-week matchup with UC Riverside on Wednesday afternoon.
- The Lopes will then promptly head off to Champain, Ill. for its "bye week" series at Illinois.
