BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A fifth-inning rally wasn't enough for the Grand Canyon softball team, as the Lopes dropped the rubber match to CSU Bakersfield (5-25, 2-1 WAC), 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at CSUB Softball Complex. GCU (20-19, 1-2 WAC) was led by
Bianca Boling, who gave the Lopes both runs with a 2 RBI double.
Three-straight singles from
Laynee Gomez,
Taylor Kaye and
Jordon Keeton loaded the bases for the Lopes in the top of the second, but GCU couldn't get anything going.
Bakersfield got on the board first with an RBI double to center field and a GCU throwing error in the bottom of the second to lead, 2-0.
The 'Runners added a run in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single to send a runner home from third.
Bianca Boling brought the Lopes within one run in the top of the fifth with a 2 RBI double to the right center wall to send
Sierra Smith and
Niki Gonzalez through home plate.
The Lopes were unable to close the gap and came up short in the rubber match to fall to the 'Runners, 1-2, on the weekend.
Kaye was 2-3 on the game with a pair of base hits, while
Shea Smith,
Sierra Smith, Boling, Gomez and Keeton each had a hit apiece.
Yesenia Morrison (5-3) dished out a strikeout in her third loss of the year, while fellow freshman
