OREM, Utah – The Grand Canyon softball team turned the momentum after a game-one loss, as the Lopes (21-20, 2-3 WAC) won game two, 4-1, over Utah Valley (10-21, 2-3 WAC) for a doubleheader split on Friday afternoon at Wolverine Softball Stadium. GCU fell 5-3 in game one.
GAME ONE
Utah Valley got on the board first with an RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the second frame.
Madelyn Dowdle evened the score with a lead-off home run in the top of the third over the left center wall. The yard ball is her fourth of the season.
The Wolverines used four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to open a four-run, 5-1 lead over the Lopes.
GCU battled back in the seventh inning, as an RBI single from Dowdle sent
Taylor Kaye home from second for a run with no outs on the board. An RBI fielder's choice from
Shea Smith gave the Lopes a third run, but the comeback fell short for GCU as the Lopes dropped game one, 5-3.
Dowdle was 2-3 with three RBI and a home run, while
Niki Gonzalez was also 2-3.
Loriann Olson,
Sierra Smith,
Bianca Boling and Kaye each had a hit apiece.
The pair of
Alexa Coons (7-3) and
Yesenia Morrison combined for three strikeouts on the game.
GAME TWO
GCU got on the board quickly, as the UVU defense made a pair of error in the top half of the first.
Shea Smith used a shortstop error to make it home for the 1-0 lead.
The Lopes continued the hot start with two more runs in the first, as
Sierra Smith reached on a fielder's choice and a throwing error from the Wolverines allowed the pair of Gonzalez and Boling to score.
UVU came back with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame to bring the score to 3-1.
A home run from Gonzalez, her eighth of the year, gave the Lopes an insurance run in the top of the seventh and GCU held the lead through the bottom half of the seventh for the 4-1 win.
Gonzalez was 2-4 with two runs, an RBI, a home run and a double, while the quad of Boling,
Laynee Gomez,
Sierra Smith and
Kendsey Hill had one hit each.
GCU and UVU will close out the three-game series tomorrow with a rubber match at 2 p.m. (MST).
