PHOENIX - After giving up an early home run,
Jake Wong settled in and Grand Canyon used a three-run third to claim a 3-2 victory over Chicago State on Friday night. The game took just a few ticks under two hours to complete as GCU won its fourth straight Western Athletic Conference opener.
Wong improved to 3-1, throwing 7.0 strong innings while allowing five hits and two first-inning runs. The right-hander struck out six Cougars.
"I felt good. I think it was my longest outing of the season," Wong said. "106 pitches -- I felt good, I felt strong. I wanted another one, but that's about the limit. My fastball was pretty effective. Hats off to them, they can swing it pretty well. They're ready to hit a fastball and so we had to mix. Later in the game, it was just a mix of everything."
Conference play got off to a bit of an inauspicious start as Chicago State's Tyler Lowe slugged a two-out, two-run homer over the right field wall to take an early lead.
"He put a good piece on it and went the other way with a fastball," Wong said. "I need to be sharper with my execution."
Wong's sharpness improved as he tossed the final six frames scoreless.
GCU recovered from the early deficit by scoring three runs in the third inning.
Preston Pavlica led things off with a double to center field. A walk drawn by
Quin Cotton and a single by
Pikai Winchester loaded up the bases. A passed ball scored the Lopes' first run of the game, and
Ian Evans cleaned things up with a two-run single to right-center field.
Following the third, GCU owned a 3-2 lead that held through the final six innings.
Nick Ohanian and
Mick Vorhof pitched in back of Wong, each throwing one scoreless inning of relief. Vorhof earned the save, a first for any GCU pitcher this season.
Since returning to the Division I ranks for the 2014 season, GCU has won its conference home opener all five times.
"We know that we play a tough non-conference to help us prepare for WAC play," Wong said. "We stayed confident. We've stuck with each other. WAC play is kind of just a new season for us. What's behind us is behind us. It's important that we learn from it. It's a new season and we're happy to start it off on the right note."
It was GCU's first game that clocked in at under two hours since a home matchup against Sacramento State on May 13, 2016.
The second game of the three-game set with Chicago State is set for a 2 p.m. pitch on Saturday. GCU's
Jake Repavich (0-2, 7.50) will square off against right-hander Edward King (1-1, 6.52).
