PHOENIX - Grand Canyon clinched its 10th consecutive Western Athletic Conference series by routing Chicago State 13-5 on Saturday afternoon at Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark. The Lopes tied their season-high run total in the winning effort.
The Lopes used a big six-run third inning to respond to an early Chicago State 3-0 lead. GCU put up back-to-back three-run innings in the sixth and seventh to solidify the win.
"It's all about having quality at bats, that's what we're going for every day," third baseman
Zach Malis said. "I felt like today, across the board, all nine guys-- our quality of at bats were better today."
Malis had the most memorable swing of the day. After hitting several balls over the wall but foul, he finally connected in the sixth. The three-run shot to right field was the second longball of the season for the junior.
"I was down two strikes," Malis recalled. "I was choked up (on the bat) trying to put the ball in play. I happened to see a change-up up, and I was able to stay on it and square it up. "
Chicago State was on the board first thanks to a three-run, five-hit third inning. It was the second consecutive day that the Cougars were the ones to jump out in front.
The Lopes took no time to respond and quickly erase Chicago State's advantage. GCU strung together four consecutive hits off the bats of
Austin Bull,
Quin Cotton,
Pikai Winchester and
Ian Evans. Five of the inning's six runs came with two outs including a pair of two-out walks drawn by Malis and
Preston Pavlica, and a two-run single from
Griffin Barnes.
The Cougars put a solo homer on the board in the fifth inning to narrow the deficit to two, but GCU responded an inning later with Malis' three-run shot.
With another three-run inning in the seventh, the Lopes put the game out of reach.
Kona Quiggle hit a two-run double to right-center to put the Lopes in front 11-5.
Jake Repavich picked up his first victory of the season in his longest outing. The lefty tossed 6.2 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits. He recorded three strikeouts.
"He's starting to get stronger with every outing so far," pitching coach
Rich Dorman said. "He's still trying to find his slider a little bit. We're going to continue to work on that... A lot of them swinging over the top, a lot of ground balls. He's getting better."
Mike Lundin came on in relief for the first time in a GCU uniform, tossing 2.1 hitless and scoreless innings. Lundin struck out six of the nine batters he faced.
"It's always different being a starter than coming in and all of a sudden, your first outing, you've got runners on base," Dorman said. "Not his normal warm-up routine. You just get hot in the 'pen and then here we go. He finished up real strong his last two innings."
Pikai Winchester posted a four-hit game for the Lopes, leading a lineup that saw five batters get multiple hits.
Coupled with eight series wins last year and a series win to end the 2016 season, the Lopes have claimed 10 straight series wins in conference play.
"We knew that games in the WAC are really important for us," Malis said. "Winning series is the main goal every weekend. Even more so, winning on Sundays. We got two this weekend so far, but winning on Sundays is really what helps us move towards the WAC Championship towards the end of the year."
Ethan Evanko, a redshirt senior, will make his first start since March 2016 when the Lopes take on Chicago State in the series finale on Sunday.
"I think he's the mayor of our team. He's going to be good," Dorman said. "I expect a good angle on his fastball and he's got a good slider going right now. He's going to be in attack mode and he's going to go after guys. I'm excited to watch him get in that starting role again."
First pitch between the Lopes and Cougars is set for noon at Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark.
