SAN DIEGO - All was well through seven innings as Grand Canyon had opened up a 4-1 lead on host San Diego State in GCU's final game of the Tony Gwynn Legacy. The Aztecs rallied, however, using a four-run eighth inning to take a 5-4 lead and beat the Lopes on Sunday afternoon.
GCU built its three-run lead by scoring four times in the middle innings. But the Lopes also left several scoring chances on the basepaths, stranding the bases loaded on three occasions and totaling 12 left on base for the game.
After making a short rehab start on Tuesday,
Jake Repavich was back on the mound to start for GCU. The left-hander allowed one run in the first to start off the outing but bounced back and pitched the next 3.0 innings scoreless. In his 4.0 innings total, he struck out two and walked none.
San Diego State had its offense working early, but the Lopes took advantage of some base-running blunders that helped put an end to the first two frames with just one run of damage.
GCU tied the score in the fourth.
Quin Cotton led off the frame with a single and would come around to score on a
Zach Malis single later in the inning.
The Lopes opened the fifth inning on fire, recording singles in four consecutive plate appearances and yielding one run.
Preston Pavlica pushed across another run to put the Lopes in front 3-1.
GCU scored for the final time in the seventh. Cotton was hit by a pitch and scored when Wyatt doubled deep to left-center.
Needing six outs to wrap up a victory, GCU surrendered four runs in the eighth. A single and two free passes loaded the bases with nobody out.
Mick Vorhof came on in relief and recorded the first two outs while allowing just a run. But the Aztecs used a game-tying double and a go-ahead single to take a 5-4 lead and hold on late.
Cotton and Wyatt posted multi-hit outings for GCU as a part of a nine-hit performance.
Next up, the Lopes return to Phoenix to host the GCU Classic. Cal State Northridge and Valparaiso come to town and will play GCU two times each. The first game of the weekend is set for 6 p.m. MST on Friday night vs. CSUN.
