OREM, Utah – Senior
Jessica Gajewski hit a season-high seven 3-pointers for a standout performance on Saturday afternoon at Lockhart Arena, but the Grand Canyon women's basketball team came up short to Utah Valley, 84-64. Grand Canyon (14-13, 8-5 WAC) split the conference series with the Wolverines (11-17, 5-8 WAC), as the Lopes claimed the first meeting in January.
Gajewski led all players with 27 points on the game, shooting 10-13 from the field and 7-9 from downtown. Her seven 3-pointers on the day ties her season-high, while her 27 points is just four shy of her career best of 31.
The game marks her fifth 20-point performance this season and 14th-straight double-digit performance. Gajewski has tallied single digits in just four outings this year.
Senior
August Touchard added eight points, while fellow senior
Brie Mobley had seven. Freshman
Camille Hailey had six points and junior
Kavita Akula added five.
Three-straight 3-pointers from Gajewski, Touchard and Mobley started the scoring for the Lopes in the first, as all nine of the first points came from downtown. Utah Vally went ahead by as many as four points before a three-pointer from Gajewski tied it up. UVU laid in a last-second layup to close the first quarter ahead of the Lopes, 20-18.
Utah Valley went off after a quick GCU basket to start the second quarter, as the Wolverines established a 22-5 run to lead the Lopes, 42-25, heading to the locker room for halftime.
The Lopes held the Wolverines to a one-point advantage in the third but were unable to halt the UVU scoring as GCU trailed, 63-45, at the end of the third quarter.
Grand Canyon was unable to come back from the deficit, as the Lopes closed out the game behind, 84-64.
GCU closes out the regular season a week from today, as the Lopes square off with WAC-leading CSU Bakersfield at 2 p.m. (MT) on the road.
