SEATTLE – Three seniors scored in double-digits for the Grand Canyon women's basketball team, as the Lopes (14-12, 8-4 WAC), downed Seattle U (13-14, 7-5 WAC), 64-57, on Thursday night at the Connolly Complex. The win gives the Lopes the sweep over the Redhawks this season, as GCU defeated SU in the Western Athletic Conference opener in January.
The senior trio of
Brie Mobley,
Jessica Gajewski and
August Touchard accounted for 55 of 64 total points for the Lopes, while the freshman pair of
Camille Hailey and
Myra Williams totaled nine points together.
In her eighth double-double performance of the season, Mobley led GCU with 21 points and 12 boards on the night, as well as a team-high three assists. The double-digit scoring game gives Mobley her eighth 20-point game of the season and 23rd in double figures.
Gajewski was right behind with 19 points on the night, paired with three rebounds and an assist. Touchard finished with double-digits on the night, as the guard had 15 points and five boards, as well as an assist.
Hailey added six points for the Lopes, while Williams had three points and five boards. Sophomore
Vanessa Murphy added seven boards.
The Lopes got on the board first, as the pair battled back-and-forth throughout the opening quarter before Seattle U went on a 9-0 run to lead the Lopes, 21-13, at the end of the first.
The Lopes matched it with a 9-0 run of their own to start the second quarter to go ahead, 22-21. The Lopes held Seattle scoreless through the first six minutes and 27 seconds of play in the second quarter.
The Redhawks hit back-to-back 3-pointers for a 6-0 run to close out the second quarter ahead of GCU, 27-22.
GCU began its comeback, as the Lopes outscored the Redhawks 17-16 in the third quarter to cut the deficit to four, 43-39, heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
The Lopes dominated in the fourth quarter, outscoring Seattle 25-14 and hitting 9-of-10 free throws in the final 30 seconds of play to earn the conference win.
GCU heads to Orem, Utah to face Utah Valley in the second to last regular season contest. The Lopes and the Wolverines tip off at 3 p.m. (MT).
