DENVER - Junior right-handed pitcher
Jake Wong was named Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week the conference announced on Monday. In front of an Opening Night crowd of 3,749, Wong shut down No. 7 TCU over the course of his six innings on the mound.
It's the third such honor for Wong after winning the award twice a year ago including over Opening Weekend.
Amid the buzz of Opening Night, a brand new ballpark, over 90 scouts in attendance, and the largest crowd in program history, Wong was able to maintain his focus and find success against a ranked opponent for the second straight season.
"I didn't really pay much attention to that," Wong
told Paul Coro after the game. "I got out there and took it all in for a second and then it was go time. I put those distractions out of the way and tried my best to focus on the task at hand."
The junior -- who has a rising national profile -- finished the game with 6.0 innings of scoreless baseball, holding TCU to two hits. Wong walked only two while striking out a career-high nine.
"He's aggressive with his fastball," GCU head coach
Andy Stankiewicz said. "He moves it and likes to throw in. His breaking ball was working well. He just did a really good job of keeping them off-balance."
Wong earned the praise of national pundits on Friday, saying he looked poised to move up the draft boards even further.
GCU hosts Washington State on Tuesday as the Lopes wrap up their first homestand in their new ballpark. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. MST.
