The Grand Canyon women's volleyball team fell to UT Rio Grande Valley 25-19, 25-17, 25-18 on Thursday night in GCU Arena.
The loss drops GCU to 10-13, 3-8 WAC, while UTRGV improves to 18-8, 9-3 WAC.
The Lopes were led by
Melody Horton with 12 kills and nine digs.
Kayla Matthews added six kills and eight digs.
Teagan DeFalco finished with a match-high 21 digs while
Molly Feldmeth led the Lopes with 19 assists.
Sarah Hagge and
Annabelle Kubinski led the Lopes with three blocks apiece.
UTRGV was led by Ragni Steen Knudsen with 14 kills and nine digs. Barbara Silva added eight kills for the Vaqueros.
In the first set, GCU was down by four points early but came back within 18-17 after a Horton kill and UTRGV error. The Lopes were within 20-18, but UTRGV scored five of the next six points to close the set 25-19.
GCU took the lead in the second set by a 10-7 score after a Horton kill. The Vaqueros scored the next seven points to lead 14-10. The Lopes pulled within 18-17 after a UTRGV error, but the Vaqueros scored seven of the next eight to claim the 25-17 win.
In the third set, GCU led 13-12 after a Hagge kill. UTRGV went on a small run to lead 20-16 after an ace by Dubravka Vukoja. The Vaqueros forced a pair of GCU errors to close the set and match, 25-18.
GCU is back in action on Saturday when it hosts California Baptist in a Senior Day match. The Lopes will honor seniors
Kendall Gray,
Tressa Schuler and
Meme Fletcher.
