The Grand Canyon women's volleyball team put an exclamation point on Senior Day with a sweep over California Baptist 25-23, 25-22, 25-13 on Saturday afternoon at GCU Arena.
"We talked to the team before the match about great moments being born from great opportunities, an old quote out of a Disney movie," said head coach
Tim Nollan. "The point was that we were right there on Thursday (against UTRGV), and we just didn't quite execute as well at the end. Today I felt that we did that and, to be honest, it was just us doing the same thing we do every day. We just did it at the right times."
Unlike Thursday night, the Lopes were able to close out sets down the stretch to earn a complete team win. With the victory, GCU improves to 11-13, 4-8 WAC, while CBU drops to 19-8, 9-5 WAC.
"I really thought it was a team effort," said Nollan. "They all stepped up at different moments.
Kaira Moss, offensively, had another breakout match and finally got back into rhythm.
Teagan DeFalco played exceptional, and everyone stepped up at different moments throughout the match to make sure it was a team effort."
GCU was led by Moss with 14 kills and eight blocks. She hit at a team-high .591 clip.
Melody Horton added a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs. DeFalco recorded a match-high 24 digs.
Molly Feldmeth added a double-double with 36 assists and 11 digs.
Tressa Schuler, one of GCU's three seniors, recorded three of the Lopes' six aces.
California Baptist was led by Summer Avery with 11 kills and Tesa Oaks with nine kills.
In the first set, both squads combined to commit 19 errors, but it was GCU who got it together first to close out the set. The Lopes trailed 22-20 and later 23-21, but GCU scored the final four points to claim the set. A pair of Moss and Feldmeth blocks helped secure the win.
The second set was close throughout with 10 ties and four lead changes. The final tie came at 18. With GCU leading 23-22, the Lopes got back-to-back kills from
Annabelle Kubinski and
Sarah Hagge to finish off the Lancers 25-22.
GCU hit at a .394 clip in the final set and never looked back after a 10-6 lead and an early CBU timeout. The Lopes led by as many as 10 points at 20-10 after a Kubinski kill. GCU cruised to the 25-13 win.
"Everyone always wants to win on Senior Day," Nollan said. "I think the team was really motivated to make sure we gave the seniors that great gift. 'We are going to win on senior day and make sure you have something special to remember GCU volleyball for the rest of your life.' Really happy we got to do that and the seniors played and contributed at big moments for us so I'm really proud of them. I'm proud of the group for sending them off in style."
Shortly before first serve, GCU honored seniors Schuler,
Kendall Gray and
Meme Fletcher.
GCU is back in action next week when it hosts New Mexico State on Thursday night in GCU Arena.
