CHICAGO – The Grand Canyon women's volleyball team bounced back from a tough loss to sweep Chicago State 25-12, 30-28, 25-23 on Saturday.
"It was good to see our team respond today," GCU head coach
Tim Nollan said. "We competed well today and took care of the ball on the offensive side of the game. Always good to get a sweep on the road."
The Lopes swept the Cougars for the second time in as many weeks. With the win, GCU improves to 10-11, 3-6 WAC, while Chicago State drops to 8-17, 2-7 WAC.
Freshman outside hitter
Kayla Matthews led the Lopes with 15 kills and nine digs. Junior outside hitter
Melody Horton added a double-double with 13 kills on .480 hitting, along with 10 digs. Sophomore
Sarah Hagge chipped in with eight kills and freshman middle blocker
Kaira Moss finished with seven kills.

Teagan DeFalco recorded 20 digs and sophomore setter
Molly Feldmeth finished with 36 assists.
In the first set, back-to-back kills by Moss and Hagge pushed the Lopes ahead 9-6. Senior outside hitter
Tressa Schuler served a pair of aces during a service run and gave the Lopes a 14-7 lead. GCU won easily 25-12 and hit at a .565 clip in the set.
Chicago State took a 14-10 lead in the second set. The Cougars scored four of the next five points to take a commanding 18-11 advantage. GCU put together a furious rally to take a 21-20 lead after a Matthews kill and two CSU errors. The Lopes and Cougars exchanged sideouts until the Lopes broke through. A Hagge kill gave GCU the lead and the Lopes forced a CSU error to win the set 30-28.
GCU scored four of the first five points to open the third set. GCU took a 13-9 lead after a Matthews kill and CSU error. CSU was down by seven but cut the deficit down to 20-18 to force a Lopes timeout. CSU pulled within 23-22 and 24-23, but the Lopes went to Hagge for the match-ending kill at 25-23.
GCU is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Seattle U in GCU Arena.
