Joshua Braun is No. 2 by uniform and Grand Canyon history.
The senior shooting guard moved into second place on the Lopes' career scoring list. He enters
Thursday night's home game against New Mexico State with 1,541 career points, making him the only 1,500-point scorer besides all-time record holder Bayard Forrest (2,195 points, 1972-76) in the program's 69-year history.
Braun, GCU's leading scorer this season at 13.4 points per game, passed Duane Gagnon (1,490 points, 1965-69) when he capped a 16-point game against Mississippi Valley State with two free throws on Dec. 18. Braun began the season ranked sixth in GCU scoring history.
"I had no clue," Braun said of his standing in GCU history. "It really does put a lot in perspective. i was just driving into campus thinking about how this is my fifth year here and a lot has gone on since I was living in the dorms as a freshman. It's really cool to be part of it all and to be part of this team."
Forrest, a former Phoenix Suns center, has a firm grip on the record even if Braun and the Lopes enjoy an extended postseason run. The two-time first team Academic All-American would need to average 30 points for the remainder of the season and get several postseason tournament chances to catch Forrest.
