PHOENIX, Ariz. – Sophomore forward
Anyssa De Vera subbed into the game just moments before netting her first goal of the season and giving the Grand Canyon women's soccer team its first tie on Thursday afternoon against UC Santa Barbara. The Lopes (3-3-1, 0-0 WAC) and the Gauchos (3-2-1, 0-0 Big West) knotted the game, 1-1, after a full 110 minutes of play at GCU Soccer Stadium.
GCU remains unbeaten at home and holds a 3-0-1 record over the last four contests.
"We were playing a really tough team," head coach
Derek Leader said. "I'm really proud of the way the girls performed. We played some players in some different positions and we played a different system.
"We had moments in the game where we looked really good and moments that we can still work on and improve, but it's good to continue the path that we're on. In the end, we're able to grind out a result."
De Vera wove through two defenders to create space for herself before firing a near-perfect arching shot to the top right corner of the opposing net in the 71st minute of the game to tally her first goal of the season, unassisted.
The GCU offense was slow to start, but finished the double overtime game with 14 shots and four on goal. UCSB led with 29 and nine on goal.
Senior goalkeeper
Blakely Fraasch made a season-high eight saves on the day to lead the Lopes defense.
The Gauchos got on the board first as Amanda Ball capitalized on an assist and scored her fifth goal of the season in the 21st minute. UCSB would lead for just over 50 minutes before De Vera restored the Lopes life and pushed not one but two overtime periods.
McKenzie Cook,
Milla Benedetti and De Vera had three shots apiece, while
Amanda Lopez,
Kelsey Smith,
MJ Carrieres,
Rachel Mina and
Jessica Wong each had one.
The Lopes head out on the road to face Houston Baptist (0-3) on Sunday. Kickoff at Sorrels Field is set for 11:00 a.m. (MST).
