PHOENIX – The Grand Canyon women's volleyball team fell to Seattle 25-22, 20-25, 25-12, 25-23 on Saturday afternoon at GCU Arena.
With the loss, GCU drops to 5-11, 0-4 Western Athletic Conference, while Seattle improves to 5-11, 1-2 WAC.
The Lopes were led by
Teagan DeFalco with a double-double of 10 kills on .381 hitting, to go along with a team-high 18 digs.
Claire Kovensky added eight kills and six digs, while
Natalie Tardy added seven kills on .312 hitting.
GCU served up seven aces, two each from DeFalco and
Emma Ahern. Ahern added 13 digs.
Statistically the Lopes and Redhawks were even, with the exception of the blocking category where SU held a 12-5 advantage over the Lopes.
Seattle was led by Katarina Marinkovic with 16 kills. Maja Stojanovic finished with nine kills and 11 blocks.
GCU opened the match scoring the first four points of the first set on a
Heidi Carpenter service run. With the scored tied at 17-17,
Randahl Powers gave the Lopes the lead before SU scored four straight to lead 21-18. The Lopes pulled within 22-20 and 24-22, but SU got the final kill from Stojanovic at 25-22.
GCU won the second set, holding SU to a negative hitting percentage of -.030. GCU build a 16-10 lead after a kill by
Tressa Schuler. Seattle pulled within 23-20, but a Schuler kill and SU error ended the set 25-20 in favor of the Lopes.
Out of the break, Seattle controlled the third set, hitting at a .452 clip. Seattle built an early 13-3 lead and never let the Lopes back in the set. SU won the third 25-12.
GCU trailed 16-10 in the fourth set before a big 7-1 rally tied the set at 17-17 after back-to-back SU errors. GCU turned the run into an 11-2 stretch after a two kills from Tardy to lead 21-18. Seattle came back to tie the set at 22-22 before Kovensky put GCU ahead 23-22. Seattle got the final two points off a GCU attack error and a service ace to end it 25-23.
GCU is back in action on Friday, October 6 at CSU Bakersfield. First serve is set for 4:30 p.m. on the CSUB campus.
