BAKERSFIELD – The Grand Canyon women's volleyball team fell to CSUB 22-25, 11-25, 21-25 on Friday night on the road.
GCU falls to 5-12 on the year and 0-5 in the Western Athletic Conference. CSUB retains the top spot in the WAC as they improve to 12-8 and 5-0 in conference.
Claire Kovensky was impressive on the night with a team leading nine kills in addition to seven digs and five blocks.
Natalie Tardy closed in on 1,000 career kills as she added seven tonight while
Kobie Dunn, who saw time at libero tonight, led the Lopes with eight digs.
Maria Adams helped the Lopes on defense with eight blocks on the night.
The Roadrunners were led by Haylee Roberts with 13 kills and a .429 hitting percentage.
The two teams started the match neck and neck early when a Roadrunner error tied the first set at five. CSUB started to pull away but a Tardy kill kept the Lopes in it making the score 10-13. Another error had the Lopes in prime position and within one point, 15-16. After some back and forth and a GCU service error, the Roadrunners took the first set 25-22.
The Lopes came out strong to start the second set with kills from Kovensky,
Sarah Hagge and
Jordyn Sanchez contributed to a 7-4 lead. The Roadrunners came storming back with a 9-0 run giving them the 7-13 lead. It was all CSUB from there on the way to an 11-25 second set win.
The final set started much like the first with the teams knotted at eight. CSUB would pull away making the score 15-21 before GCU started their comeback attempt. Kovensky had two kills and the Roadrunners had three errors down the stretch bringing the teams within two at 21-23. The Roadrunners would secure the final two points and ultimately the match, 21-25.
GCU is back in action on Thursday, October 12 when the travel to Edinburg, Texas to take on UTRGV. The second game of the Lopes three game road stretch will is set for 5:00 p.m.
