FULLERTON, Calif. – The Grand Canyon women's soccer team closed out its non-conference slate with a loss at Cal State Fullerton on Sunday night at Titan Stadium, as the Lopes (3-8-1, 0-0 WAC) dropped the road match, 4-0, to the Titans (7-2-2, 0-0 BWC). GCU will have a weekend off from competition before beginning Western Athletic Conference play on October 6 at UTRGV.
"It was a difficult game for us against a very good team," head coach
Derek Leader said. "The entire non-conference schedule was definitely a challenge for our young sqaud.
"We take a little something away from each match and we're still growing and learning each time we play."
GCU struggled to find its offensive in the weekend finale, as the Lopes were outshot 15-2 in the first half and 24-7 overall. Senior goalkeeper
Blakely Fraasch tallied five saves on the night.
Freshman
Hannah Nichols led the Lopes with two shots on the game, while five players in
McKenzie Cook,
Anyssa De Vera,
Kelsey Smith,
Madison Cox and
Erika Story had one shot apiece.
Story, Nichols, Cook, De Vera and Smith each tallied one shot on frame.
The Titans netted the first goal of the game in the 20th minute and went on to score two more times in the 26th and 34th minutes to take a 3-0 lead heading into the break.
GCU held Cal State Fullerton to just one goal in the second, as the Titans netted the fourth and final goal of the game in the 76th minute to solidify the 4-0 decision.
