DENVER - Junior forward
Damian German was named the Western Athletic Conference's Offensive Player of the Week for his 7-point performance over the weekend. German recorded his first career hat trick in a win over UC Riverside on Thursday and added an assist against CSUN on Sunday night. German's honor was the first weekly award for a GCU player this season.
German's first career hat trick came in a high-scoring affair against UC Riverside to begin the weekend. In the 24th minute, German took on his defender one-on-one and cleared enough space to fire a clean shot from the top left corner of the box that found the back of the net and tie the game at 1. He helped grant GCU a lead heading into the halftime break, converting on a penalty kick. His most clutch goal of the evening came as time was running out and GCU was facing a 4-3 deficit. Moments after the Highlanders scored, German countered with his third goal of the evening deep in the box off the assists of
Austin Day and
Josh Drack. This sent the game into overtime and the Lopes went on to win.
On Sunday, German helped the Lopes find an equalizer against CSUN in the 49th minute.
Marco Afonso crossed a ball from the left, German got a toe on the ball and directed it to
Musa Morris Demos who scored his first collegiate goal.
German, now with 9 points for the season, is third in the conference in the category. His mark of 4 goals is tied for third in the WAC. Both numbers are team-leading marks.
Grand Canyon wraps up non-conference play on Friday, hosting Oral Roberts at GCU Stadium at 7 p.m. MST.
