PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Grand Canyon women's soccer team tallied a combined 28 shots, 15 on frame, on Friday night against Stetson, but were unable to net a second equalizer as they fell, 2-1, in the final minutes at the GCU Soccer Stadium. Grand Canyon fell to 3-5-1 on the year, while Stetson advanced to 5-2.
"It's our job to find the back of the net," head coach
Derek Leader said. "We can look pretty possessing and taking shots but at the end of the day, we have to finish out chances. That was an opportunity lost."
The Lopes weren't shy in front of the net, as GCU fired 28 shots on the night led by a game-high nine from junior
McKenzie Cook. Senior
Milla Benedetti fired six shots with one on goal, while fellow senior
Madison Cox had five shots with four on frame.
Sophomore
Anyssa De Vera had four with two on goal, while four players in freshmen
Hannah Nichols and
Amanda Lopez and seniors
Kelsey Smith and
Emma Cain had one shot apiece.
Tied at halftime, the Hatters netted the first goal in the 68th minute off of a free kick into the box. Stetson's Sarah Collins scored her sixth and seventh goals of the season in the Hatters' win.
With her second header goal and third total of the year, Cox got a head on a service ball from Cook to net the equalizer at the 77 minute mark and keep the Lopes in the action. Freshman
MJ Carrieres recorded her first collegiate assist, as the defender was responsible for the throw in that started the scoring play.
With just over 90 seconds to play in regulation, Stetson's Collins tallied her second score of the night for the go-ahead goal and the game-winner.
GCU senior goalkeeper
Blakely Fraasch made one save on the night, while Stetson's Emily Plotz made 14.
The Lopes return to GCU Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 17 to host Hawaii (4-4) in game one of the Grand Canyon soccer doubleheader. Kick off is slated for 4 p.m. (MST).
