Tarasue Barnett is set to represent the Jamaican national team and the Lopes at the London 2017 IAAF World Championships, taking place on Aug. 4-13.
"We very excited that Tarasue has been selected to represent both Jamaica and GCU in the women's discus competition," GCU head coach
Tom Flood commented. "It is always a wonderful honor to represent your country and school on the world stage."
The World Championships will take place from Aug. 4-13 in London, UK. Preliminaries will held on Friday, Aug. 11, followed by finals on Sunday, Aug. 13.
"It is a true testament to her incredible athletic talent and her desire to perform at the highest levels in track & field," Flood added.
Despite being a redshirt during the 2017 outdoor season, Barnett was able to achieve the world A Standard in the discus to earn a spot on the Jamaican team. The Jamaican native is the current GCU record holder in outdoor shot put (14.92m) and discus (61.28m), and the indoor shot put (15.42m) and weight throw (19.19m).
"This honor will bring a nice finish to our 2017 season and it will be a wonderful starting point for our 2018 season," Flood said. "Next year will be our first season to be NCAA DI eligibility and hopefully it conclude with Tarasue becoming an NCAA All-American or National Champion."
