The newly-crowned WAC Champions close out their final season of NCAA Division I transition with a non-conference series at UC Davis this weekend. The Lopes and Aggies represent a WAC / Big West clash, GCU's second such matchup of the season after falling to nationally-ranked Long Beach State in a single game earlier this season. First pitch on Thursday and Friday is set for 2:30 p.m. MST with a Saturday finale at 1:00 p.m. MST.
By virtue of a series win at Utah Valley last weekend, the GCU baseball team clinched its second Western Athletic Conference regular season championship in three seasons. Finishing with a 20-4 (.833) record, the Lopes posted the best mark the conference has seen since eventual national champion Rice posted the same winning percentage (25-5, .833) in 2003.
It came down to the final game of the weekend for the Lopes to clinch the championship after splitting the first two games of the series with the Wolverines. Friday's series opener took 5 hours, 25 minutes to be decided, but it eventually went the way of the Lopes. With a three-run top of the 11th highlighted by the go-ahead RBI double from Ian Evans, the Lopes began the series on the right note. Mick Vorhof went a season-long 3.1 innings of relief, keeping Utah Valley scoreless and working his way out of some critical jams. Utah Valley got to GCU pitching early in Game 2, going on to win 9-2. On Sunday, the Lopes jumped out to a 4-0 lead but had the lead trimmed to one late. Grand Canyon scored two runs in each the seventh, eighth and ninth innings en route to a victory behind a 17-hit effort.
Grand Canyon posted the best conference winning percentage in school history and won all eight series for the first time in program history. Four series wins came via three-game sweeps, while four more came on 2-1 wins.
The Lopes have a vested interest in a three-game series between New Mexico State and CSU Bakersfield in Las Cruces, N.M. over the weekend. GCU needs at least one loss from the host Aggies to be recognized as outright conference champions. Should New Mexico State pull off a sweep of CSU Bakersfield, the Lopes and Aggies would be dubbed Co-Champions despite Grand Canyon's dominant three-game sweep of New Mexico State in Las Cruces earlier this season.
Looking to UC Davis, the Aggies have a shot to finish with a .500 record in the ever-challenging Big West Conference with their final series against UC Irvine next weekend. But first, it's a three-game non-conference series with the Lopes. UC Davis is coming off of two straight conference series victories over UC Santa Barbara and UC Riverside. Most recently, the Aggies took two of three games from last-place UC Riverside at home. The series win included a walk-off victory, a near complete game shutout, and a series finale loss.
The Aggies have a 3-2 mark against the WAC this season after taking two of three from Utah Valley and splitting a two-game series with Sacramento State.
In 24 previous meetings between the schools all-time, UC Davis holds a 15-9 advantage. However, the schools haven't met up since 2004 when UC Davis won a three-game series in Phoenix. In Davis, the Aggies hold the slight 6-5 advantage all-time over the Lopes.
A series sweep would grant GCU its third 30-win season in the four-year transition from NCAA Division II. The Lopes have already surpassed last season's 25-win total and have guaranteed a non-losing overall record.
Following the final three games of the year, the majority of GCU's roster will be distributed to various summer league teams across the country. Back in Phoenix, Brazell Stadium will undergo massive renovations in the offseason to increase capacity and update to a new, modern facility.
