The Grand Canyon men's volleyball team is set face top seed Ohio State Buckeyes in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday. The Lopes will play for the MIVA title for the first time in program history.
The Lopes defeated the Lewis Flyers in the MIVA Playoffs for the first time in five consecutive seasons to move onto the finals. In five sets, Grand Canyon downed Lewis, 25-27, 25-18, 18-25, 25-19, 16-14 to complete the victory.
The MIVA Finals will take place on Saturday, April 22 at 4 p.m. MST. The game will be aired on Ohio State's Buckeye Vision.
Led by second-year head coach
Matt Werle, GCU has a 19-10 overall record and their first trip to the conference, including a program-best record of 11-5 in the MIVA play. In GCU's last season in the MIVA, the Lopes hold the No. 14 spot before transitioning to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation next season.
No. 2 Ohio State is currently on a six game win streak and holds a 29-2 record (16-0 MIVA). In the MIVA Tournament, the Buckeyes defeated Quincy, 3-0 in the quarterfinals and Ball State, 3-2 in the semifinals.
