After winning its fourth straight conference series in Chicago last weekend, the Grand Canyon baseball team returns to Phoenix for a three-game series with UT Rio Grande Valley at Brazell Stadium. The Lopes begin a stretch of 10 home games in a 13-game span against the likes of UTRGV, Kansas, Seattle U and San José State to wrap up the home schedule. All three games will be broadcasted on GCU.tv with Friday's opener simulcast on the WAC Digital Network.
GCU is off to a 10-2 start in WAC play, its best start to a conference schedule since an 11-2 start in 2015. GCU has won its first four conference series for the first time as a Division I team.
The success in the WAC standings is evident based on the Lopes' rankings in the conference's statistical leaderboards. For WAC play, the Lopes are the only team to rank in the top three in all three facets of the game: second in batting average (.303), second in earned run average (3.00) and first in fielding percentage (.991).
Individually, in conference play, Tyler Wyatt leads the WAC in average (.488) and AJ Franks is the only qualifying pitcher with a perfect 0.00 ERA.
Last weekend in Chicago, the Lopes took two of three games from Chicago State. In Thursday's Game 1, the Cougars snuck by GCU with a six-run third inning that included a grand slam. Grand Canyon ace Jake Wong had an uncharacteristic performance atop the mound, going just 3.0 innings.
However, the Lopes had the wherewithal to bounce back and claim the final two games to come away with a series win. Friday's middle game came in a landslide victory with GCU dismissing Chicago State 12-2 in a mercy rule-shortened contest, led by a three-double performance from Garrison Schwartz. In the rubber match finale, GCU had no trouble scoring four early runs but were left searching for a big hit to extend the lead. AJ Franks and Mick Vorhof stepped in though to limit Chicago State to one run over the final 4.2 innings and claim the 4-3 victory.
The visiting Vaqueros also claimed two of three wins from their conference opponent, coming at home against Seattle U. Due to a schedule change, the Vaqueros and Redhawks played 21 innings of baseball on Saturday with the teams splitting the doubleheader. UTRGV scored a 12th inning run in the opener to win 7-6 before losing the nightcap 6-5. In the finale, the two clubs combined to score 16 runs in the final four innings as the home team hung on for a 12-9 win.
On the season, UTRGVÂ is 21-19 overall but has struggled away from its home Edinburg. The Vaqueros are just 3-11 on the road. Thus far in conference action, UTRGV has been swept by Utah Valley and New Mexico State while winning series over CSU Bakersfield and Seattle U. In mid-week action, five UTRGV relievers combined to pitch eight scoreless innings as the Vaqueros beat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for the first time in four tries this season.
Overall, the clubs have met nine times previously all coming in the last three seasons. GCU holds the 6-3 edge overall with a 3-0 mark at home against the school then known as the Texas-Pan American Broncs. Last year, the Lopes won two of three games in the final series of the season to keep UTRGV out of the WAC Tournament. The first two games of the series were very similar, both 10-0 victories in seven innings for the Lopes. Wong earned his first WAC start and second collegiate victory in Game 2. The Vaqueros salvaged the series with a win in the finale.
NOTES: In its six conference home games thus far, Grand Canyon is batting a scorching hot .351 with a .443 on-base percentage... the Lopes are coming off of their first error-free series since the final three-game set at Sacramento State in 2015... Preston Pavlica looks to return to the Brazell Stadium field for the first time since the Oklahoma State series after missing 27 games with a wrist injury. The sophomore returned to action in Game 3 at Chicago State.
