PHOENIX – The GCU men's volleyball team finds themselves in familiar territory this week, but hopefully there will be an unfamiliar outcome. For the fifth season in a row, the Lopes will face the Lewis University Flyers in the MIVA Playoffs. The past four contests, all played at Lewis, have resulted with a season-ending loss by the Lopes. This year, GCU has put together the most successful season in program history, and will look to change the tide and earn a trip to the MIVA finals with a win over the Flyers.
Led by second-year head coach
Matt Werle, GCU has an 18-10 overall record this season, including a program-best 11-5 mark in the MIVA conference. This will be GCU's last season to compete in the MIVA as the Lopes will move to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation next year. Grand Canyon earned the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament while Lewis sits at No. 2 with an overall record of 23-6.
In January, Grand Canyon hosted Lewis for back-to-back matchups that could not have been closer. Both games went to five sets, and the teams split the series. Lewis took the first matchup 3-2 despite a raucous GCU crowd of nearly 1,000 fans. During the second match, senior
Matthew Kinnebrew led the Lopes to victory with 17 kills.
Lewis is currently on a six game winning streak and most recently defeated Lindenwood in five sets during the first round of the playoffs. The Lopes bested McKendree in four sets to advance out of the first round. GCU has won nine of their last 11 matches.
The contest will begin at 5 p.m. MST and will be played on the Lewis home court in Romeoville, Ill. Live stats and video are both available. The winner of the matchup will meet the winner of #1 Ohio State and #4 Ball State on Saturday, April 22.
