After a Tuesday night duel with in-state neighbors, No. 7 Arizona, the Grand Canyon baseball team takes to the road in WAC play. The Lopes will go to Chicago for a three-game series with Chicago State beginning on Thursday night. First pitch on Thursday will come at 4:00 p.m. MST while Friday will be at 1:00 p.m. MST and the finale will take place at 10:00 a.m MST on Saturday.
Thursday night looks to be must-see baseball with the WAC's ERA leader, Jake Wong (1.38) toeing the rubber. Wong stands at 4-1 and has held opposing batters to a .169 average.
The Lopes have more wins than any other WAC team, posting an 8-1 mark and are 2-1 on the road during conference play. The last WAC matchup GCU had was against Sacramento State when the Lopes took the first game 2-1 before suffering their first conference loss on Saturday, 7-1. They bounced back in a big way to take the series with an 8-2 victory securing their third conference series win.
While playing against conference foes, offense has been a premium for the Lopes. GCU leads WAC play with 60 runs and have three hitters, Tyler Wyatt (.484), Tom Lerouge (.393) and Austin Bull (.333), all hitting over .300 in conference games. Lerouge has led the way for the offense with 10 RBIs and a .607 slugging percentage. Not to mention, Ian Evans is coming off of a 3-for-3 game with a double against Arizona.
Chicago State is coming off of a series loss against CSU Bakersfield and a mid-week 15-1 loss against Milwaukee. The Cougars sit at 7-22 overall and are 3-3 in the conference. The offense is led by Matt Paciello who is hitting .330 on the year with 21 RBIs. The ace of the staff is Jake Perkins who posts a 2-2 record with a 3.86 ERA and 30 strikeouts in seven starts this year.
GCU went 2-1 against Chicago State last year and leads the all-time series 6-2.
