PHOENIX - Grand Canyon's offense was firing on all cylinders on Saturday afternoon, pounding out 12 runs on 15 hits to defeat Northern Colorado 12-3 at Brazell Stadium. With the win, GCU ensured nothing less than a series victory in its second weekend of WAC play.
For the second straight year,
Marc Mumper hit a three-run home run off of Northern Colorado. This year's edition came in the second inning, putting GCU in front 3-0 and jump-starting the Lopes' offense.
"I was having a pretty good at bat," Mumper recalled. "I was just trying to battle. I wasn't really looking to hit a home run there. It's always good to get a hit early. He threw it where I wanted it, and I hit it a little ways."
Zach Malis and
Quin Cotton located ground balls in perfect positions to record singles to lead off the second inning. With one out in the frame, Mumper put a charge into the ball on a 1-2 count.
"That was big, Marc's done a nice job of shortening up his swing and trying to work inside the ball," head coach
Andy Stankiewicz said. "(Northern Colorado starting pitcher Troy Watson) left the ball in and he was able to get inside it with some elevation to get a ball up in that (outfield) net. That's big for him. Any time you can get a three-run shot, it's big."
The Lopes went on to plate three runs in the fourth.
Austin Bull,
Tom Lerouge,
Tyler Wyatt and Malis provided the hits in the inning to put the Lopes in front 6-1.
Grand Canyon put the ballgame out of reach with a six-run sixth inning. The Lopes racked up five hits and picked up RBIs off the bats of Cotton,
Josh Meyer,
Ian Evans and Wyatt.
The No. 1 and 2 batters in GCU's lineup, Bull and Lerouge, finished another successful day 3-for-6 with five walks drawn.
"Those guys do a nice job, and they look like they're both seeing the ball real well," Stankiewicz said. "They're making pitchers work. That's what you want to do. We were able to get (Watson's) pitch count up early. They understand what they're supposed to do at the plate."
While Grand Canyon's offense was providing the run support, lefty
Jake Repavich was cruising through the middle innings of the game. Repavich allowed a solo home run in the third inning, but proceeded to retire the next 13 batters he faced. The junior picked up his third win of the season and lowered his ERA to 3.89.
"That's great, it's a great job by him," Stankiewicz said. "The job that he did was terrific. He moved the ball in and out, and you have to against these guys. They're big and they're strong, and you have to make pitches against them. That's exactly what he did."
It was a season-high in both the runs and hits column for Grand Canyon, topping a 11-run tally vs. Saint Mary's and a 14-hit tally at New Mexico. The Lopes got hits from eight of the nine batters in the lineup, with multi-hit efforts coming from Wyatt (three hits), Bull, Malis, Cotton and Mumper.
GCU will look to make it back-to-back series sweeps to open up WAC play when they clash with the Bears at Brazell Stadium again on Sunday afternoon. The Lopes will send freshman lefty
Jack Schneider (1-0, 3.38) to the mound for the second consecutive weekend, facing Northern Colorado right-hander Connor Leedholm (0-1, 4.50). First pitch is slated for 12 p.m. MST.
