STANFORD, Calif. -- The Grand Canyon softball program suffered a 2-1 loss to UCONNÂ on the final day of the Stanford Easton Classic. Mental mistakes and missed opportunities plagued the Lopes throughout the contest. GCU falls to 23-4 on the season. They finished out the tourney weekend at 3-2.
Camree Wartman led all Lopes with a 2-for-3 day including a triple and a RBI double.Â
How it HappenedÂ
The Lopes started the game off well quickly loading the bases off a
Loriann Olson hit and a pair of singles. Unfortunately, GCU wasn't able to capitalize leaving three stranded.
From innings two through four both team's defenses kept them in the contest. UCONN finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth, plating one run off an RBI single. The Huskies were then able to push one more across the plate after a Lope miscue, snatching the 2-0 advantage.Â
The Lopes quickly answered in the top of the sixth.
Shea Smith started things off for GCU laying down a stubborn bunt for the hit, leaving room for a Wartman RBI double to put the Lopes within one at 2-1. But, that was the closest they would get.
The Lopes caught a break in the final frame, with a Huskie error that landed
Taylor Kaye on third. GCU just couldn't connect effectively with the ball and suffered its second loss of the weekend.Â
Up Next
The Lopes return to the Bay Area next weekend for the Santa Clara Round Robin. GCU will meet CSU-Long Beach on Friday, Mar. 17 at 9 a.m. MST.Â
