PHOENIX - Grand Canyon women's basketball assistant coach Krystal Thomas has signed with the Washington Mystics, the franchise announced Wednesday.
Thomas will return to the professional ranks after the conclusion of the 2016-17 season. She spent the 2016 season with the Seattle Storm, the franchise that drafted her in 2011. Â
"It's an amazing opportunity to be joining the Washington Mystics," Thomas said. "I'm very excited to play for coach (Mike) Thibault. He's one of the best coaches in the game, and I can't wait to learn and grow under his leadership. With the additions of stars Elena Delle Donne and Kristi Toliver, as well as the returning fire power of Emma Messeman and Tayler Hill, the future for the Mystics is incredibly bright."
Thomas will join her fourth franchise as she enters her sixth season in the WNBA. She will join a Mystics squad that is loaded with talent and will work under tenured head coach Mike Thibault,Â
"Adding Krystal Thomas to our team gives us a player who will be a big part of our post rotation as well as add to the great chemistry in our locker room," Thibault said. "She is an excellent defender and rebounder, enabling us to play different combinations in the post in order to match up against the various front lines in our league. Her leadership qualities will only enhance the development of our entire team. We are excited to have Krystal join the Mystics organization."
Thomas was selected in the third round (36th overall) of the 2011 WNBA draft by the Seattle Storm. Since then she has been a member of the Phoenix Mercury and Indiana Fever. She will now call Washington, D.C. home this summer. Her WNBA's achievements include setting a franchise record for offensive rebounds in a season (93) while with the Mercury during the 2012 season.
