PHOENIX – The GCU men's volleyball team will return to Antelope Gymnasium this weekend for two home matchups on Saturday. The Lopes will take on Benedictine of Mesa at 11 a.m. and then face California Lutheran for a night game at 5 p.m. Grand Canyon currently is in second place in the MIVA and has an overall record of 7-5.
"We are looking forward to hosting a new program to campus (Cal Lutheran) and a cross-town university," head coach Matt Werle commented. "We do not know much about Cal Lutheran which has really allowed us to focus on skills that we need to improve on for the second half of the season. This weekend is going to be very focused on fine tuning those skills and incorporating some new offensive options for conference. Both of these teams this weekend will compete well and this will be a good test for our mental toughness."
Grand Canyon had been led by their middle hitters all season. Ashton King leads the team with 108 kills and Drake Silbernagel is second on the squad with 95 kills. Michael Milstein has ran the offense efficiently, tallying 441 assists during the season. Reigning WAC Defensive Player of the Week Sky Engleman leads the team with 118 digs.
Scouting Benedictine
Benedictine currently has a record of 6-2 this season with their most recent victories coming over Hope International. The Redhawks defeated Hope on Saturday, Feb. 11 in four sets and then took five sets to win again on Sunday, Feb. 12. Last season, GCU and Benedictine met for Grand Canyon's Senior Day. The Lopes won the contest in four sets.
Scouting California Lutheran
California Lutheran has a record of 2-7 so far this year. This will be the first meeting between the Kingsmen and the Lopes in program history. Cal Lutheran will also play a neutral match against Benedictine at Antelope Gym at 2 p.m.
