DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Senior guard
Jessica Gajewski reached 1,000 career points thanks to a 16-point performance on Sunday afternoon at Bethune-Cookman, but the Grand Canyon women's basketball team suffered a 69-60 setback to the Wildcats at the Moore Gymnasium in Daytona Beach. The Lopes fall to 2-6 on the season, while the Wildcats advance to 4-2.
Despite the loss, the Lopes fought to the wire in front of what seemed like a GCU Arena crowd – family and friends of multiple student-athletes made the trip to support the Lopes.
Senior
Brie Mobley led GCU in scoring with a team-best 18 points, while fellow senior
August Touchard was in double-digits with 11 points on the game. Mobley led the Lopes in rebounding with seven boards, while the guard pair of Mobley and Touchard each had a team-best three assists.
The Lopes used a 6-3 run at the end of the second quarter to go ahead, 26-24, heading to the locker room with the lead.
Bethune-Cookman came back with fire in the third and outscored the Lopes, 27-7, to lead by as much as 19 points, but GCU fought back in the fourth quarter and outscored the Wildcats, 27-18, to cut the gap to nine points.
Redshirt senior
Jordan Jackson added five points, while the pair of freshman
Camille Hailey and redshirt junior
Katelyn Lee had four apiece. Freshman
Myra Williams had two points on the game.
The Lopes return to Phoenix to host Long Beach State on Thursday, December 7, at the GCU Arena. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. (MT) and admission to all GCU women's basketball games is free of charge.
