PHOENIX – The Grand Canyon University athletics department continues to reach new heights on the field and in the classroom. Student-athletes have raised the bar once again as the Lopes increased their graduation rates on both the male and female side. GCU Department of Athletics is graduating 78 percent of its student-athletes according to the 2017 NCAA Graduation Success Rate, an increase of 12 percent from last year.
"Consistent with all Division I student-athletes, we are starting to see an upward trend in some of the academic metrics the NCAA uses to measure student-athlete success," Senior Associate Athletic Director Jason Linders said. "It is important that we recognize the hard work and dedication of our student-athletes, along with the support of our faculty, coaches, administration and support staff."
The NCAA released its most recent graduation success rate (GSR) data Tuesday and showed that GCU posted 14 of 16 measured programs with a GSR of at least 70 percent, an increase from eight programs last year. Going even further, eight of those teams earned a GSR of at least 80 percent.
In the 2016-17 academic year, GCU increased its GSR by 12 percent from 2015-16 as well as seeing an 18 percent increase over the last two years. Male student-athletes saw a 14 percent increase in GSR and now stand at 74 percent. GCU female student-athletes had an 83 percent GSR, a nine percent increase from the previous school year as well.
The GSR gold standard was reached by two GCU programs as men's tennis and softball teams each had 100 percent of their student athletes graduate. Men's golf and women's volleyball posted impressive numbers as well with GSR's of 92 and 91 percent respectively. Men's soccer, women's golf and women's soccer also reached new heights as each program saw at least 80 percent of their student-athletes receive their degree.
Men's and women's basketball have made impressive strides as both programs saw an increase of close to 10 percent. The men went from 61 to 71 percent while the women went from 67 to 76 closing in on becoming the ninth GCU team with a GSR of 80 or better.
"We still have some work to do," mentioned Linders, "but we are certainly encouraged to see the programming, guidance, and culture we have in place contributing to a clear enhancement of our student-athlete success."
GCU is very proud to enter their first year of Division I eligibility and the student-athletes have displayed this pride on and off the field. GCU continues to strive to enhance the growth of student-athletes when it comes to education as the athletics department works to provide resources such as the Student-Athlete Development Center which was opened last year and contributed to the GSR success.
The GSR is based on a six-year cohort and the latest report includes only student-athletes who received athletic scholarships, enrolled at Grand Canyon University as freshmen or incoming transfers from 2007-10, and completed their degree within six years. Complete details of the GSR report are available here.
