PHOENIX – The Grand Canyon men's volleyball team, following the best season in program history, released its 2018 regular season schedule on Monday. This upcoming season will be the first season in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation for GCU as they take on a bevy of top ranked teams. Last season the Lopes went 19-11, a program best, and received a national ranking for the first time. The 2018 schedule features three 2017 NCAA tournament teams including two matchups with conference foes BYU, the 2017 NCAA Runner-Ups.
GCU will be tested from the beginning with away matches at 2017 NCAA Tournament team Barton before heading to George Mason for a back-to-back.
"This year's schedule is well rounded with teams from each conference" said head coach
Matt Werle. "Opening up away against a team that made it to the NCAA Tournament this previous season will be a tough task. Barton is well coached and has made some tremendous strides in the past few seasons. Heading north to George Mason with a quick Saturday to Sunday turnaround will be brutal, but we wanted to challenge the guys early both physically and mentally."
From there the Lopes will head to Nashville, Tenn. to showcase the growth and competitiveness of men's volleyball and compete in the inaugural Off the Block "Grow the Game Challenge" which features 13 matches making it the largest non-conference even in men's volleyball recent history. GCU will face three teams including Hawai'i before opening their home schedule with out of conference matches against NJIT, UCI and UCSD. Following a brief two game road trip the team will return home to open MPSF conference play.
"It goes without saying that our new conference is the toughest conference from top to bottom with six of the seven teams finishing in the AVCA Top 15 Poll this past season" said Werle when asked about the MPSF.
The MPSF was the strongest conference in men's volleyball by far last year, placing six of seven teams in the Top-15 at the end of last year, two more than any other conference. The Lopes will introduce the MPSF to Antelope Gym right away with four straight home matches before traveling to California for matchups against Concordia and USC.
GCU will return home to host Menlo College and Mt. Olive before heading to UCLA and Pepperdine. Three of the last five matches for the season will be at Antelope gym concluding with Benedictine University-Mesa before the MPSF tournament.
"We will be hosting new universities in Antelope Gym for the first time that have not played in our environment! We look to create a loud and hostile environment every night! Our nine seniors plan on leaving on a strong note and are excited for the challenges this season will bring."
Before the season gets underway GCU will host a scrimmage tournament featuring collegiate teams from all around Arizona on October 21 before traveling to USC on Nov. 11 for a final tune up tournament scrimmage. The Lopes will play a total of 28 games, including 14 at Antelope Gym. Find the full schedule
