PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Grand Canyon women's soccer team battled through 90 minutes of regulation to push the first overtime period, but the Lopes were outdone by Kansas City, 1-0, after a quick goal in the first minute. GCU falls to 4-11-1 overall and 1-3 in the Western Athletic Conference, while the Roos are 9-6-1 overall and 4-0 in the WAC.
"It's so disappointing to do everything right spatially and not get the result," head coach
Derek Leader said.
"The girls played extremely well and again one mistake gets capitalized on. This is the second conference match that we lose in overtime. Not getting atleast one point is devastating."
GCU was narrowly outshot by UMKC 14-13, as senior
Rachel Mina led the Lopes with three looks on the day. Junior
McKenzie Cook had two shots, while the group of
Milla Benedetti,
Hannah Edwards,
Madison Cox,
Camryn Larson,
Anyssa De Vera,
Sandra Hill,
Megan Anth and
Jessica Wong each had a shot apiece.
The Lopes dominated the play in regulation with solid passing and offensive threats throughout both the first and second half, but a cross shot from the right side into the top left corner of the goal in the first minute of the sudden death overtime gave UMKC the conference victory at GCU Soccer Stadium.
Senior goalkeeper
Blakely Fraasch made six saves on the day, while Kansas City's goalkeeper had four.
The Lopes continue conference play on the road on Friday, Oct. 20 at Utah Valley. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. (MST). GCU will then return home to host Seattle U on Sunday, Oct. 22 at 1 p.m.
