PHOENIX – The GCU men's volleyball team will compete in one of the best collegiate volleyball atmospheres this week as they travel to Honolulu to take on the No. 6 ranked Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors. The Lopes will face off with Hawai'i on Wednesday, Jan. 11 and Friday, Jan. 13 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Grand Canyon is currently 1-1 on the season after dropping its opening match to No. 8 UC Irvine and defeating UC San Diego in four sets last weekend. The Lopes have a balanced offensive attack this season and are being led by middle blocker Ashton King who has amassed 28 kills so far. Libero Sky Engleman is leading the defense with 18 digs, an average of 2.57 per set.
"After last weekend, we are hoping that the first match jitters are out of the way," head coach Matt Werle stated. "We are still working out some kinks with our starting lineup and hope to find the right combination this week as we will need to play at the top of our game. Hawai'i is always such a special place to play. They are so welcoming to us and this is something we look forward to each year."
Scouting Hawai'i
Hawai'i just won their eighth Outrigger title after defeating Erskine, Princeton, and No. 15 Ball State on their home court. They will be starting with a 3-0 record for the third consecutive year. Last season, the Lopes were defeated in both matches with the Warriors but took them to four set in the second contest.
"Hawai'i is a very good team," Werle added. "They just moved up one spot in the AVCA Top 15 Poll to No. 6 in the country. They are big and very physical and have a nice balance at the net."
Both contests will begin at 7:05 p.m. HT, 10:05 p.m. MST. The game will be televised on OC Sports and broadcasted on ESPN 1420AM.
