DENVER, Colo. – Grand Canyon's
Marcus Flannigan,
Kelsi Klotter and
Tarasue Barnett have been named Western Athletic Conference Track & Field Athletes of the Week for the week of Jan. 23-29. This marks six WAC honors for the program in three weeks.
Flannigan, a senior from Chandler, Ariz., earned his first WAC honor of the year after his performance at the Washington Invitational on Jan. 27-28. The Arizona native placed second in the long jump with a WAC-leading 7.43 meters, leading all conference long jumpers by nearly a foot. Flannigan also finished fifth at the UW Invitational in the 60-meter (6.88) and 200-meter dash (21.86) to rank first and second in the WAC, respectively.
Klotter, a redshirt senior from Eugene, Ore., earned her second WAC honor of the season after she broke the GCU indoor record by over 42 seconds with a conference-leading 17:14.71 in the 5000-meter run.
Barnett, a junior from Kingston, Jamaica, earned her first WAC honor of the year after throwing a WAC-leading 18.42 meters in the weight throw to place fourth out of 47 competitors. Barnett's mark came up just three centimeters short of a new GCU record and led all WAC throwers by 1.37 meters.
Joining Flannigan in men's WAC honors, UMKC's Bryce Miller earned conference field Athlete of the Week. Miller placed first in the mile at the Jayhawk Classic with a time of 4:10.63 to rank first in the WAC. He also ran a leg of the DMR that took first place with a time of 10:18.28.
Other men's track nominees: Grand Canyon's Samuel Proctor placed 11th of 36 in the 5000m (14:39.65) at the UW Invitational, ranking first in the conference… Seattle U's Matt Seidel placed 53rd of 82 in the 3000m (8:30.70) at the UW Invitational… UTRGV's Alberto Herrera finished 8th of 36 in the mile (4:22.68) at the Houston Invitational.
Other men's field nominees: UTRGV's Paul May finished 10th of 34 in the weight throw (16.8m) and 14th in the shot put (15.11m) at the Houston Invitational… Seattle U's Jordan Kenison placed 16th of 19 in the triple jump (13.43m) at the UW Invitational… UMKC's Lucas Van der Watt placed fifth of seven in the pole vault (16'4") at the Jayhawk Classic.
Other women's track nominees: UMKC's Sarah Fogarty won the 3000m (10:02.75) at the Jayhawk Classic, ranking first in the WAC… Seattle U's Lila Rice placed 52nd of 75 in the mile (5:02.49) at the UW Invitational, ranking first in the WAC… UTRGV's Krysta Martinez finished 9th of 36 in the mile (5:09.10) at the Houston Invitational.
Other women's field nominees: UMKC's Christy Nell tied for ninth in the pole vault (10'9") at the Jayhawk Classic… Seattle U's Caylah Lunning placed 14th of 49 in the long jump (5.38m) at the UW Invitational.
