The Grand Canyon men's and women's track & field teams are set to compete at the Washington Invitational in Seattle, Wash. for the first time in program history from Jan. 27-28. After the decision to stay home from the NAU Lumberjack Team Challenge last week due to weather, the Lopes will look to continue the early season momentum into the sea-level track.
"We are all very excited about this week's competition," head coach
Tom Flood commented. "Washington has a great facility and the meet has incredible athletes competing in it. It will be a wonderful opportunity to see exactly where we are as a team at this time in the season; especially after missing last weekend's meet."
With more than a thousand athletes competing, the UW Invitational goes from Friday and Saturday in the Indoor Dempsey. Competing in one of the marquee events in the NCAA indoor season, Grand Canyon will face several high-caliber teams, including: California, Pepperdine, Oregon State, Cal Poly, Gonzaga, Stanford, Idaho, Washington and WAC-rival Seattle U.
Competition will begin on Friday at 1 p.m. PST with the first events in the multis, distance medley relays and 5,000-meter, as the Lopes' long distance crew will look to take advantage of the sea-level track. Friday will also include the 200-meter, the women's weight throw, first flights of pole vault, and 3,000-meter. Saturday's full day opens at 9 a.m. PST while the top-two sections of all running events from the 400-meters up to 3,000-meters will be grouped together starting at 3:15 p.m PST.
After a successful first week of indoor season, including three Western Athletic Conference Track & Field Athletes of the Week (
Scott Marshall,
Sasha-Gaye Marston and
Kelsi Klotter), several conference leading performances and a GCU pole vault record broken by Marshall, the Lopes will look to continue the momentum into the Washington Invitational.
Marshall earned his first conference honor at the NAU Friday Night Duels after he vaulted for a new GCU indoor record of 5.30 meters to win the event and lead the WAC. The record-breaking mark topped his previous record set in 2016. Klotter also earned her first conference honor after she earned her first-collegiate victory in the 3000m with a time of 10:24.14 (converted time) to rank third in the conference. Marston earned her third-career WAC honor after she led the Lopes in weight throw (16.21m) and shot put (13.22m) to rank second and third in the conference, respectively.
