PHOENIX – The GCU men's volleyball team will face another nationally ranked opponent this weekend as the No. 6 Lewis Flyers come to Antelope Gym for two matches. The Lopes and the Flyers will play on Friday, Jan. 27 at 6 p.m. and again on Sunday, Jan. 29 at 1 p.m.
After notching two wins against conference opponent Lindenwood last weekend, GCU readies to play a leader in the MIVA. Grand Canyon evened their record at 3-3 with the victories and all three of their losses have come against ranked opponents this season. The Lopes have a well-balanced offensive attack and are led by middle blocker Ashton King who has tallied 54 kills this season.
"We are going to need to come out fast and never let up," head coach Matt Werle said. "If we can serve tough and execute the scouting report, then these could be a couple long matches. This is the third Top 10 team that we have played so we should be comfortable competing."
Scouting Lewis
"Lewis University is a very well coached and physical team," Werle added. "They have a long history of success and have been playing at a high level. They also knocked us out last year in the first round of the MIVA Playoffs so we are hoping to upset them this weekend."
Lewis is 5-1 this season and is riding a five game winning streak. The Flyers dropped their first match of the season to No. 3 BYU but have been playing well recently, defeating both Penn State and Saint Francis in five sets last weekend. Last year, GCU was defeated by Lewis in four sets during the MIVA Tournament. The Lopes and Flyers split matches during the regular season.
