Lopes start spring season with victory

IRVINE, Calif. - Behind a 2-1 edge on the doubles side, the Grand Canyon women's tennis team began the spring portion of its schedule with a 4-3 defeat of UC Irvine. The match was played on Saturday after weather postponed the action from Friday. The Lopes and Anteaters split singles play with each team claiming three victories.
Grand Canyon received singles victories from Susan Baklini, Celina Buhr and Emilia Occhipinti with the two latter recording sweeps. Baklini's 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 victory was the match clincher for GCU.
On the doubles side, the Lopes' No. 2 and 3 duos took home victories. The 2-1 edge on the doubles side proved big for Grand Canyon, which needed the doubles point to claim victory after the squads split singles. The team of Occhipinti and Lana Rinaldi prevailed 6-4, while Buhr and Alexandra Petrzalkova won 6-3.
The Lopes will make the quick trip over to Riverside, Calif. for a meeting with UC Riverside on Sunday. The match is set to get underway at 12 p.m. MST.
