PHOENIX – The GCU men's volleyball team will play their first home matches of the season this weekend against conference foe Lindenwood. The Lopes and the Lions will face off on Friday, Jan. 20 and again on Saturday, Jan. 21. Both games will begin at 6 p.m. MST and be played in Antelope Gym.
Grand Canyon has a record of 1-3 this season after playing some of the top competition in the country. All three of the Lopes' losses have been to ranked teams this season, one to No. 8 UC Irvine and two to No. 6 Hawai'i. The matches with Lindenwood will be the first MIVA tests for GCU this season.
"We are very excited to be playing at home after two tough weeks on the road to start the season against very tough teams," head coach Matt Werle noted. "This week of practice has been high intensity, with a lot of reps and work for our pin attackers. Our middles have done a nice job producing points for us, but to win this weekend, we will need a more balanced offensive attack. As always, this weekend will come down to serving and passing."
Scouting Lindenwood
"Lindenwood will be our first conference match up and we love our home court advantage," Werle added. "They are a familiar team to us because they returned a number of starters. Any conference match up this season will be a grind from the first point to the last."
The Lindenwood Lions are currently 0-3 on the season after suffering five-set losses to California Baptist, Concordia Irvine, and Saint Francis. The Lions return the majority of their lineup from last year and are being led by outside hitter Ryan Moore who has amassed 43 kills for the year. Last season, the Lopes defeated Lindenwood twice on their home court. GCU was led by returners Shalev Saada and Michael Milstein during the victories.
