TULSA, Okla. – The Grand Canyon women's golf team completed its second tournament of the fall at the Bob Hurley ORU Shootout. The Lopes had two players crack the top-40 on the player leaderboard and as a team GCU finished in 12th place.
"We showed glimpses throughout these past two days of how good we can be if we stick to the process," head coach
Lauren Giesecke said. "We have to get back to work so we can turn glimpses into solid rounds and ultimately tournaments."
In her first career tournament at GCU,
Leleaga Meredith got off to a great start posting the fourth lowest score in the first round. After 10 pars and two birdies, Meredith ended the first round at +4 and with the lowest score from any golfer in the WAC.
As a team, GCU picked things up in the second round, posting the third lowest score in the second round, shooting 305 as a team. The Lopes improved from 14th place in the first round and moved up three spots to 11th place at the conclusion of the second round.
Amy Ruelas was on fire on the back-nine, shooting -3 with three birdies on holes 12, 15 and 16. For the round, Ruelas finished at +1 while
Carolina Sandstrom posted the second lowest round on GCU's squad. Ten pars in the second round put Sandstrom at +6 for the round.
In the final round of the tournament, GCU would shoot 314 as a team and place two players in the top-40. As the tournament kept progressing,
Deanna Salvatori continued to improve every single round, dropping her score. In the final round, Salvatori posted her lowest round (75) to end the tournament in a tie for 34th place.
"Amy (Ruelas), Leleaga (Meredith) and Deanna (Salvatori) all showed flashes throughout the tournament," Giesecke added. "We had some of the best scores throughout the two days but now we have to be able to sustain that play for 54 holes."
Meredith would remain in the top-40, finishing just one stroke behind Salvatori in a tie for 39th place. After a great second round, Ruelas ended the ORU Shootout tied for 49th place at +25. Sandstrom nearly cracked the top-50 in her second career tournament at GCU, shooting +26 for the tournament.
The Lopes will return to the golf course for the New Mexico State Aggie Invitational on Oct. 3.
