IRVINE, Calif. – The Grand Canyon men' soccer team was on the road for the first time this season as they squared off against UC Irvine. The Lopes outshot the Anteaters by nine shots but GCU could not recover from an early goal as GCU fell to UC Irvine 1-0. The Lopes are now 1-1-0 on the season.
After outshooting UC Irvine early in the first half 4-1, UC Irvine capitalized on one of its few opportunities with a goal in the 24
th minute from Giovanni Godoy to take the early 1-0 lead. GCU continued to attack on offense and applied heavy pressure on the Anteater's back-line as the Lopes fired off nine shots in the first half compared to UCI's two attempts.
It was much of the same story in the second half as GCU controlled possession and continued to attack offensively. The Lopes' defense held UC Irvine to just three shots in the second half while GCU attempted five.
Jose Rodriguez Nieblas came off the bench and made an impact with four shot attempts, which was a game-high along with teammate
Khadim Seye.
GCU will conclude its trip in California on Monday, Sept. 5, against Loyola Marymount.
