SACRAMENTO – The Grand Canyon women's volleyball team hit at a .272 clip for the match but fell to Nevada 25-16, 25-18, 25-21 on Saturday night. The match was GCU's final preseason match-up before the start of Western Athletic Conference action next week.
Katrice Pond led the Lopes with 16 kills on .464 hitting.
Natalie Tardy added 11 kills and four digs.
Heidi Carpenter had 32 assists and was named to the Sacramento State All-Tournament Team.
Randahl Powers and
Kaira Moss added five kills apiece.
Nevada started the match scoring four of the first five points. The Wolf Pack extended the lead to 11-5 before Tardy ended the Nevada run with a kill. After trailing by as many as six, a kill by Powers cut the deficit in half at 14-11. The Wolf Pack would end up hitting .583 in the first set and claim the 25-16 win.
Mid way through the second set, GCU was hitting .562 but trailing 15-12. Nevada extended the lead to 20-15 and claimed set two 25-18.
In the third set, GCU led 12-8 after a Tardy ace. Later the Lopes led 17-15 after Moss found an opening with a kill. With the score tied up at 18-18, Nevada ended the set on a 7-3 run to close out the match 25-21.
The loss drops GCU to 4-8 headed into WAC play.
Grand Canyon is back in action on Sept. 23 at Cal State Bakersfield in the WAC opener for both squads.
