BAKERSFIELD – The Grand Canyon women's volleyball team lost its Western Athletic Conference opener on the road to CSU Bakersfield 25-18, 25-20, 25-16 on Friday night.
Natalie Tardy led the Lopes with 10 kills.
Randahl Powers added four kills while
Jordyn Sanchez finished with three kills.
Heidi Carpenter finished with 21 assists, while
Sara Westerman,
Emma Ahern and Carpenter finished with four digs apiece.
In the first set, CSUB took the lead 10-6 before a Tardy kill stopped the Roadrunner run. Pond sent back a CSUB attack recording the solo block and tied the first set at 11-11. CSUB would go back in front 14-11 at the media timeout. The Roadrunners made it six straight points to lead 17-11 and the Lopes called timeout. CSUB would win the first set 25-18. The Roadrunners outhit the Lopes .290-.077 in the set.
CSUB started the second set scoring six of the first eight points. The Roadrunners were up 22-12 and held off a furious GCU rally to escape with a 25-20 win.
GCU scored five of the first seven points of the third set to lead early. CSUB would put together a small run to lead 10-8 as GCU called timeout. The Roadrunners would pull away and win the set 25-16.
GCU is back in action next week when it hosts a pair of WAC matches. The Lopes host UTRGV on Thursday night in Antelope Gym.
