SPRINGVILLE, Utah – In the first tournament of the season for the Grand Canyon women's golf team, GCU's
Deanna Salvatori started off with a bang finishing in third place at the Hobble Creek Fall Classic. After posting the lowest score in the first round, Salvatori ended the final round with the fifth lowest score to end the tournament at +6.
"Heading into her (Salvatori) junior year, she has really turned it on and has become the leader we need," head coach
Lauren Giesecke said. "Her best golf is yet to come and this is a great start to her season."
In the first round of the tournament, Salvatori got off to a solid start on the back-nine with two birdies and just one bogey to start at -1 through nine holes. After just two bogeys and another birdie in the front-nine, Salvatori would shoot a 71 in the first round, tied with Montana State's Kelly Hooper for first place and as the only players to shoot even through the first 18 holes. Salvatori was extremely effective on Par 3's, posting the lowest average score (2.60) on Par 3's in the first round.
Also joining Salvatori in the top-10 was GCU's
Kylie Fong with the fourth lowest score on the first day of play, shooting a 74 to end the first round in a tie for seventh place. After going +2 on the back-nine to start, Fong would end her day with a birdie on the 9th hole to end at +3 for the first round.
As a team, the Lopes were effective at converting birdies when the opportunity was presented. In the first round, GCU had the third most birdies (9) led by Salvatori and
Amy Ruelas with three each.
After ending the second round in a tie for sixth place after shooting a 77, Salvatori would put a strong finish together to climb to the top of the leaderboard. The junior was steady on the back-nine with six pars to start the final round and to close out the tournament, Salvatori would nail two birdies to end the front-nine at -1 for her second 71 of the tournament. Salvatori's average score of 2.87 on Par 3 holes was the best score from any player competing in the Hobble Creek Classic.
As a team, the Lopes finished in 12th place a +82 (934) with two players in the top-40 of the leaderboard. After shooting 74 and 75 in the first two rounds, Fong struggled on the final day with an 85 but remain in the top-40, finishing in 36th place at +18.
"We have a lot to work on but for our first tournament I feel that we are at a good starting point," Giesecke added. "We had a few players battle some illness but they were able to fight through and finish strong."
GCU will return to the course on Sept. 26 when they participate in Oral Robert's Bob Hurley Shootout.
