BERKELEY – The Grand Canyon women's volleyball team put together a strong first set but California defeated the Lopes 28-26, 25-16, 25-16 on Saturday morning in Haas Pavilion. The loss drops the Lopes to a 4-4 record this season.
Katrice Pond led the Lopes with seven kills, while
Natalie Tardy added five kills and five digs.
Heidi Carpenter had 15 assists and
Emma Ahern added nine digs.
Randahl Powers led the Lopes with four blocks, adding four kills and three digs.
The Lopes started the match strong with passing and defense, getting a pair of blocks from
Hannah Hicks to lead 5-4. GCU got to 10 points first and led 10-9 after a Pond ace. After a pair of Golden Bear attack errors, the Lopes took a 14-13 lead. With the score tied at 14-14, GCU went on a 7-1 run to lead 21-15 after an ace by Carpenter.
Cal pulled within 22-19, but Tardy sent down her second kill of the set to push GCU up 23-19. Cal rallied to pull within 23-22 but a tip kill by Tardy gave GCU set point. Cal would end up tying the match and taking it at 28-26 after rallying late.
Jordyn Sanchez got the Lopes started in the second set with an ace, followed by a
Maria Adams block. Cal pulled ahead 15-9 forcing the Lopes to call timeout. Cal would win the second set 25-16.
GCU trailed 8-4 in the third set before making a run to pull within 9-8 after a Pond ace. Cal would hold off the Lopes the rest of the way and claim the third
Grand Canyon is back in action tonight at 5 PM tonight vs. West Virginia.
