BERKELEY – The Grand Canyon women's volleyball team dropped a 25-18, 25-14, 25-19 decision to West Virginia in the final match-up of the Cal Classic in Berkeley.
Over the weekend, the Lopes (4-5) played stretches of strong volleyball but could not put it together to get back in the win column. GCU used a late rally in the third set but came up just short in an attempt to force another set.
Randahl Powers led the Lopes with 10 kills, hitting at a .400 clip.
Katrice Pond added eight kills while
Natalie Tardy finished with four kills and five digs.
Heidi Carpenter led GCU with 25 assists and
Emma Ahern added six digs.
Emily Christensen recorded a block and the Lopes scored four of the first five points of the first set. WVU went on a 7-0 run to force GCU to call timeout. GCU had a late run scoring 5-of-6 points but it was not enough as WVU claimed the first 25-18.
In the second set a kill by
Randahl Powers pulled GCU within 15-10. West Virginia would pull away and win the second set 25-14. WVU hit at a .304 clip in the second set.
In the third set, WVU scored eight of the first 10 points. The Lopes rallied late to pull as close as 20-17, after a Carpenter ace. The ace was part of a 6-0 run by the Lopes. WVU held off GCU and took the set 25-19.
Grand Canyon is back in action next weekend at the Sacramento State Invitational. GCU will take on Cal Poly, Sac State and Nevada.
