PHOENIX – Three athletes with Grand Canyon ties will participate in the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, including two current student-athletes. The 2016 Olympics began on Aug. 5 and will continue to Aug. 21 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The three representing GCU in Rio are women's swimmer
Jade Howard, women's discus thrower
Tarasue Barnett, and GCU track and field volunteer assistant,
Kenia Sinclair.
Howard, who swam for her home country of Zambia in the 2012 Summer Olympics, is competing in her second Olympics. In London, she placed 39th overall and set the Zambian record with a time of 59.35 in the 100 meter freestyle. The junior from Lusaka, Zambia is swimming in Heat 2 for 100 meter freestyle on Wednesday, Aug. 10 at 9:05 a.m.
Barnett, who is competing in her first Olympic games for Jamaica in discus throw, currently ranks 26th in the world. The junior from Kingston, Jamaica was named 2016 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field West Region Field Athlete of the Year after throwing the nation's third-best mark in discus at 61.28 meters.
Sinclair, a volunteer assistant at GCU since 2015, will be competing for Jamaica in her third Olympics. She placed sixth in the 800 meter during the 2008 Beijing Olympics with a time of 1:58.24. After qualifying for the 2012 Olympics, Sinclair was unable to compete when a herniated disc ruled her out.
