Last week GCU opened the Air Force Tournament with a tough loss, losing in five sets to Montana State. The Lopes would respond in a big way, sweeping Jacksonville State in the morning and following that up with a thrilling five-set victory over the undefeated tournament host, Air Force.
Natalie Tardy picked up where she left off last season, being named to the Air Force All-Tournament Team, along with teammate
Heidi Carpenter.
Tardy tallied a combined 42 kills in three matches, including a single-match high of 18 kills against Air Force. Tardy was all over the court adding 23 digs, eight blocks and five aces.
Carpenter was impressive seeing her first collegiate experience as the freshman had a combined 76 assists and 21 digs, including a key kill in the fifth set against the Falcons.
As a team, the biggest differential is the blocking department as the Lopes have a 36-to-21 edge in total blocks this season. GCU has served up 20 aces, 177 digs, 140 assists and 145 kills.
Eastern Kentucky is a member of the Ohio Valley Conference. EKU began the year at the Duke Invitational, falling to LSU 3-0. The Colonels dropped a pair of five-set matches on day two, coming up short against Duke and UNC Greensboro. EKU is led by Celina Sanks with 3.08 kills per set.
Eastern Washington went 1-2 over the opening weekend, defeating Lamar, but falling to Kansas and Mississippi State at the Bulldog Invitational.
CSU Fullerton opened the year at the Chattanooga tournament. The Titans defeated Mississippi Valley and South Carolina State, before losing to Chattanooga. CSUF lost to Niagara on Tuesday night.
